Tooth Extraction

While dentists do everything they can to save a tooth, sometimes extractions are the best choice.

Dr. Kenneth Curl makes tooth extraction virtually painless, and he can replace your tooth with a restoration that looks natural.

Compassionate & Gentle Care From a Board-Certified Dentist

Many patients from The Woodlands, TX, and the surrounding communities turn to Dr. Kenneth Curl and his highly trained staff when they suffer dental health issues requiring tooth extraction. If anyone can save your tooth, Dr. Curl can. If the tooth cannot be saved, Dr. Curl can perform extractions safely and gently without referring you to an oral surgeon.

Dr. Curl also removes wisdom teeth when they are impacted or growing in at an angle. In these situations, wisdom teeth can contribute to misalignment and the need for braces, as well as an increased risk of infection. Extraction is often the best way to avoid these issues. If you feel any discomfort or pain near your wisdom teeth, schedule a consultation at Advanced Premier Dental.

What About Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are notorious for becoming impacted and compromising surrounding teeth and other tissues. Dr. Curl refers younger patients in need of wisdom teeth removal to an oral surgeon, but can perform extractions for older patients himself. In either case, he will make sure you receive the treatment you need.

Every single person here is incredible and wonderful! They were all so respectful towards me and my ignorance of dental care. I never felt like anyone was judging me for not ever being to a dentist. They were kind, patient, and calm with my anxieties.

Assessing the Tooth

Saving teeth is always the priority in dentistry, and tooth extraction is considered only as a last resort. Dr. Curl will first assess your tooth, employing advanced technology to determine if the tooth can be saved.

Ensuring Comfort

Dr. Curl's gentle techniques and a local anesthetic make tooth extraction virtually painless. However, for patients who are anxious about tooth extraction, we offer sedation to ensure your comfort.

Next Steps

Missing teeth allow other teeth to shift out of position, causing more problems. Dr. Curl, who is skilled in advanced tooth replacement techniques, can recommend options appropriate for your needs.

Tooth Extraction Treatment Timeline

In general, tooth extractions are straightforward and take as little as 30 minutes, although more complex cases will take longer.

As Dr. Curl's patient, you can take comfort in knowing you are under the care of a board-certified dentist trusted by patients throughout The Woodlands.

Numbing the Area

Dr. Curl will carefully numb the area with a local anesthetic so you feel comfortable throughout the procedure. If you have a sensitive gag reflex or anxiety, the dentist can also provide sedation.

Removing the Tooth

With simple extractions, the dentist can remove the tooth simply by using forceps. However, in more complex surgical extractions, Dr. Curl may make incisions to better reach the tooth or separate the tooth into pieces for easier removal.

Treating the Extraction Site

Dr. Curl may recommend socket preservation, which involves placing a graft in the extraction site, to preserve bone density in the jaw and maintain its shape. Socket preservation helps prevent nearby teeth from slipping into the open space and creates a solid foundation for a dental implant if you are considering replacing the tooth with an implant-supported crown.

Closing the Extraction Site

If needed, Dr. Curl will stitch the extraction site closed. The dentist will also ask you to gently bite down on a piece of sterile gauze. This helps curb bleeding and encourages a blood clot to form, which helps prevent a condition called dry socket.

Questions?

The Recovery Process

Dr. Curl will provide detailed instructions on how to brush and floss during recovery. The dentist may prescribe medication for patients depending on the circumstances. In general, you can expect:
  • The local anesthetic usually continues to numb the area for a few hours after the surgery.
  • Any pain or discomfort from the extraction typically fades in the first 24 to 72 hours.
  • The extraction site may bleed in the one to two days following the procedure.
  • Healing after teeth extraction can take one to two weeks.

Patients usually need to wait for the surrounding tissue to fully heal before receiving other procedures such as dental implants.

Within the First 24 Hours
Patients should stay away from:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking through a straw
  • Eating solid or crunchy foods
  • Touching or sucking on the extraction site
  • Excessive or forceful mouth rinsing
  • Drinks and mouthwashes containing alcohol
Patients should drink plenty of fluids and limit their diet to soft foods. Healthy, nutrient-rich foods will resupply your body's resources and help it heal.

Preventing Dry Socket

Dr. Curl will also give instructions on how to avoid dislodging the blood clot, which results in a condition called dry socket. A dry socket is an exposed part of the bone that's usually protected by the blood clot after the extraction. This condition is most common in wisdom teeth removal compared to other extractions. Dry socket is easily preventable under our dentist's guidance.
